Author’s Note: I wrote many articles for Paris Passion & The Paris Free Voice in the 1980s-90s, and to have some diversionary fun I would sometimes go out on the street and gather incredible data like this one “story” I produced on the mangled-English printed on sweatshirts. I called it “Sweatshirt Haiku” because, indeed, they had the abrupt and stark feel of haiku, albeit with an absurd or surreal or naively playful aspect to them. We would read them at parties and eventually they gained in charm & meaning.
