Three Bastardized Villanelles ~ poetry by Kendra Augustin

GIRLHOOD AS AN APOCALYPSE #1

Born to die, we feel it in our bones
End of the first act
And we’re a bunch of unknowns

Our time on earth is not our own
Didn’t sign the contract
Born to die, we feel it in our bones

Wishing we were clones
Our ideologies are abstract
And we’re a bunch of unknowns

Seduced a many with our mono tones
Our innocence redact (ed)
Born to die (and we) feel it in our bones

GIRLHOOD AS AN APOCALYPSE #2

Born to die and we feel it in our bones
The weight of the end
drags us down like stones

No eye contact while on our phones
Knuckles cracked before our goodbyes send
Born to die and we feel it in our bones

Blood pacts, wishbones, perfect cheekbones
borrowed personalities, and old friend(s)
drags us down like stones

Discarded futures whispered in hushed tones
Happiness, a short lived trend
Born to die (,) we feel it in our bones

GIRLHOOD AS AN APOCALYPSE #3

Born to die, we feel it in our bones
Wasted time hating other girls for no reason
High off gossip and raging hormones

Wanted them to die alone,
Smeared their reputation, call it treason
Born to die, we feel it in our bones

Wild children eating chaperones
Didn’t mean to be mean, bitch ar-tee-zun
High off gossip and raging hormones

They’ll be beautiful, our headstones,
All our misdeeds on display for many a season
Born to die, (and) we (felt) it in our bones
