Look for The Disappointed Housewife in the 2021 Best Small Fictions Anthology!

The Disappointed Housewife is pleased (and proud) to announce that Kirsty McGrory’s flash fiction, “The Apparitions,” has been selected to appear in the 2021 Best Small Fictions Anthology, published by The Sonder Press.

Read Kirsty’s excellent story, published last May.

And here’s her bio: “Kirsty McGrory is a writer from Edinburgh, Scotland. Her writing has appeared in Gutter Magazine, The One O’Clock Gun, The Common Breath blog and The Leither. She is a regular contributor to The Wee Review and The Skinny.”

This is the first award for a piece from The Disappointed Housewife, and, to be honest, I’ve been hesitant to dip a toe into the annual competitions like BSF and Pushcart, because we’re so small and under the radar. In fact, I didn’t announce the BSF nominations this year because I was afraid of raising the nominees’ expectations unreasonably. But now …

Thanks to Kirsty, and so many of the writers who have shared their terrific work with us since our debut in 2018, it feels like time to push for a little more recognition. You’re now reading the award-winning The Disappointed Housewife after all.

Congratulations to  Kirsty, and I wish her more of the same for her writing. And thanks to series editor Nathan Leslie and The Sonder Press for somehow finding us in the crowd of print and online magazines that publish small fictions.
