We’re making a change to our submission guidelines as we wrap up our eighth year of operation. From now on we’re going to allow document attachments rather than requiring writers to paste their work into the submission email.
For the most part, literary journals allow attachments. I’ve become more confident as the years go on that Gmail’s virus scanning protects us from known threats that might be used to hack our humble little outfit, and, let’s face it, since our acceptance rate is fairly low (sorry about that), it’s rare that I actually download a document to my computer.
I’ve appreciated that 90% of contributors have gone over the submission guidelines in enough detail to catch the “no attachments” requirement, but it feels like time to step gingerly into the 21st century and accept the industry norm.
As of today, The Disappointed Housewife is happy to read doc, docx, and pdf documents. We can also view certain image files like jpgs and pngs if your work is best presented that way. Please, no .exe files or links to Google Docs or similar.
We’ve always encouraged work that experiments with form, structure, and appearance, so this will help in preserving your vision. We’ll be able to read your pieces exactly as you want them to be seen. True, we’re not always able to translate it to WordPress that way, but we’ll have the model on hand to try to replicate.
Of course, if writers prefer to copy and paste their work into the submission email, that’s fine too.
Review the new guidelines here.
